Large number of dolphins reported off Shannon Airport

A large group of bottlenose dolphins was observed on Tuesday 30 August 2011 off Shannon Airport.

Neil O'Donoghue observed this unusual sighting at around 8:30am.... "they were straight out from the first point in Drumgeely Shannon looking straight across the river to the pier in Shannongrove and up as far as the fuel jetty at Shannon airport heading down river....there must have been over 100 of them and a smaller group of them turned off and went towards the island that close to the airport".

He continued "I have lived in Shannon for 28 years and never saw that many that far up the river.... "

SDWF have been monitoring bottlenose dolphins upriver through winter transects and more recently through statis acoustic monitoring. Dolphins were reported on 50% of days off Foynes Island and we hope to deploy CPODs for acoustic monitoring further upriver over the coming months.
