Live Stranded Cetacean Training Course
SDWF in collaboration with the IWDG are hosting a training course on how to deal with a live stranded cetacean.
Date: Sunday 14 March 2010 Venue: Kilrush and Kilkee, Co Clare
The aim of this course is teach people what to do in the event of a live cetacean stranding event. It will be very practical with an exercise on the beach with whale pontoons and a model dolphin. We will discuss the practical aspects of administering first aid, beach management and what options are open to people. Although there will be some veterinary information it is not aimed at veterinarians but anyone likely to be faced with this situation.
The talks will be located in Kilrush at the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Centre (see www.shannondolphins.ie ) and the practical exercise at Kilkee.
Participants will need to supply their own wetsuits etc if they are to enter the water.

10:00 Welcome and introduction to the course 10:30 Species identification and recording 11:00 Coffee 11:30 First Aid for stranded cetaceans 12:00: Organisation on the beach
13:00 Lunch (bring your own or get locally)
14:00 Practical session on the beach with stranding kits and IWDG pontoons 16:30 Discussion and debrief 17:00 Close of Workshop
Cost of course is €30 per person for IWDG members and €50 for non-members.
